Grants for individuals

Grants for organizations

Grantmaking is a critical component of Envisioning Justice. Through the Envisioning Justice grants program, Illinois Humanities partners with individuals and groups in Illinois addressing injustices of mass incarceration and expanding our collective imagination of what is possible through the arts and humanities.

Since 2017, Illinois Humanities has awarded more than half a million dollars in grants to individuals and organizations developing arts- and humanities-based experiences that provide pathways for understanding the causes of mass incarceration and its impacts on communities in Illinois. The projects we support invite us to grapple with questions about more just possibilities and inspire us to work together to build more affirming, engaged, and empowered communities.

At Illinois Humanities, we believe addressing complex issues like mass incarceration requires a vast array of questioning and conversation to happen simultaneously and in connection with one another. Each year, Illinois Humanities seeks to support projects approaching mass incarceration from a variety of perspectives. Projects in the past have focused on using the arts and humanities to shift the narrative around themes such as restorative justice, re-entry support, and public safety.

Projects are also centered around a spectrum of mediums and disciplines. Illinois Humanities has supported documentary, podcast, and media production; prison education programs; conferences; public performances; and community dialogues. You can find more examples and information about past work supported through the Envisioning Justice grants program below.
