In a time almost forgotten, the Midwest and upper South were home to thousands of Americans who lived and worked along or on rivers as sharecroppers, fishermen, mussel-shellers, button-cutters, traveling minstrels, and moonshiners.

The Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., will present “Mussels, Moonshine, Music: Mississippi Valley Migrants in the 20th Century” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27.

Musician and cultural historian Dennis Stroughmatt examines this lifestyle using artifacts, photographs, folk tales, and a performance of river-based music passed down from the hardworking generation of his grandfather, Chancy Stroughmatt.
