MT. VERNON — The Jefferson County Historical Society is getting set to host an anti-slavery presentation.

The program will be held at 2 p.m. on June 27 at the Schweinfurth Museum at the Historical Village.

The event is free for the public.

“It’s important to us to get quality speakers into our program for the community to listen to,” said Historical Society member Joan Flood.

The presenter will be Jeanne Schultz-Angel. Schultz-Angel will be speaking about the anti-slavery movement and the Illinois Underground Railroad.

This is Schultz-Angel’s first appearance at Historical Society programs. Her master’s thesis on the anti-slavery movement was awarded the “Cavanaugh Award for Most Outstanding Master’s Thesis” in 2005.

In 2006, she was the executive director of the Lombard Historical Society in Lombard, where she managed two historic house museums including the Sheldon Peck Homestead listed on the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

“She is with the Illinois Humanities Council so she is very knowledgable about the subject,” Flood said. “She did lots and lots of research on what the truth is and what the myths are about the Underground Railroad.”

Schultz-Angel will speak about how the State of Illinois played a prominent role during the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th century.
