A Road Scholar Program by Alice Collins

Alice Collins will portray Margaret Burroughs and tell stories from her remarkable life. Originally from Louisiana, Margaret Burroughs moved to the South Side of Chicago as a child with her family during the Great Migration, in which thousands of African Americans relocated from the South to northern cities.

A multitalented visual artist, educator, and political activist, Burroughs drew upon the arts to foster community among African Americans in Chicago, express their culture, and tell their stories.

In 1961, Margaret and her husband, Charles, established the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, which remains one of the most influential institutions devoted to the conservation of African American culture in the United States.
