Bridging Gaps and Empowering Lives with the Power of Storytelling

A Road Scholar Program by Roberto Carmona

Storytelling is a tool of education, expression, communication, and a source for individual and community empowerment.

Roberto will share how his story of growing up in northwest Illinois has shaped and transformed his life and eventually helped him graduate from Harvard. Illinois is where his farmworker family settled when he was a boy. He learned stories from his parents and late brother Rene about the power of education. Roberto developed skills by reading stories about leaders and how to tell stories, by learning from educators and mentors in his life, and by using literature, theatre, and performance training.

Roberto’s presentation will include sharing leadership development tools on how to use stories for motivating individuals, engaging communities, leveraging resources for fundraising, and helping communities attract and develop new business and job opportunities. Roberto will use techniques learned from drama and comedy training to provide insights for how an audience can harness the strength of storytelling.

Through his presentation, Roberto intends to create an educational and empowering experience for those who want use story for making positive individual and community change.
