The RE:ACTION Workshop Series

The RE:ACTION Workshops series kicks off June 16 and continues this Summer and Fall, 2022, with five interactive events presenting creative approaches to understanding and addressing the enduring injustice of mass incarceration. Each workshop will feature a presentation by one of the artists, educators, humanists, and scholars of Envisioning Justice RE:ACTION who will take you inside their work in the RE:ACTION Exhibition and lead guests through an interactive prompt from the Activation Kit to practice new ways of seeing and confronting injustice. These workshops are a space to learn something new, look creatively at how we envision justice, and connect with other participants as you embrace bold new ideas together. You’ll be invited to share your activity with us in the Activation Kit, where your response will contribute to a growing archive of community responses to mass incarceration.

More workshops will be announced soon! Sign up for our mailing list to hear about upcoming events.

Invite friends, family, classmates, and community members to participate in a workshop with you and discover new ways of learning together. Share your experience with us using #EnvisioningJustice.

What happens when you remove speculation and police narratives from a crime story? What facts are you left with, and how do you know they’re really true? Maya Dukmasova, a senior reporter with Injustice Watch, will lead you through an interactive workshop based on her work of investigative journalism – truth, facts, reality | stories, claims, lies – to deconstruct biased narratives in crime reporting for yourself in the first edition of the series.

Illinois Humanities presents Envisioning Justice RE:ACTION, an interactive digital exhibition and activation kit using the arts and humanities to imagine a future without mass incarceration.

Browse dynamic works of visual art, creative writing, music, film, scholarship, and more in the RE:ACTION Exhibition, created by Illinois artists and humanists to deepen our understanding of our punitive criminal legal system and its personal, local, and global impacts. Then, put what you’ve learned into practice in the Activation Kit, with more than a dozen prompts to lead you through real-world activities to question our relationships to the carceral state, encourage healing, and share how you envision justice. Complete a prompt and share your response on the RE:ACTION website to add your vision to a growing archive of community responses to mass incarceration.
