On December 10th, the Workshop hosted an event to view and discuss the MSNBC documentary, “Ricochet: Life in a city under siege from guns,” filmed this past summer in Chicago. Stephen Franklin, the Workshop’s director of community and ethnic media, and Craig Duff, Medill School of Journalism professor, produced the six-part series.

Following the screening, we assembled a panel of experts to discuss solutions to gun violence in Chicago. The panel was moderated by Susy Schultz, president of the Community Media Workshop. Panelists included Jim Kirk, editor-in-chief and publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times; Alison Scholly, chief operating officer for Chicago Public Media/WBEZ; Janey Rountree, deputy chief of staff for public safety for the Chicago Mayor’s Office; Juliana Stratton, interim executive director for Cook County Justice for Children; and Patricia Walsh, deputy chief of patrol in Area South for the Chicago Police Department.

The evening kicks off a three-month reporting project partnering journalists with community residents to produce multimedia stories on key community issues in Chicago.
