Video: Union County Museum to Host Traveling Smithsonian Exhibit

COBDEN — A southern Illinois museum will soon host an exhibit from the nation’s capitol.

“Hometown Teams” debuts next Saturday at the Union County Museum in Cobden. Volunteers from across the state spent the day building the exhibit which highlights the history of sports.    

Paulette Aronson with the Union County Historical and Genealogy Society says the traveling display is from the Smithsonian Institution and captures the connection between towns and their sports teams. 

“To touch people in everyday walks of life in small towns throughout the country. Not everybody can make it to Washington D.C.” she insisted. “The Smithsonian is bring their things to us to help enlarge and enrich what we have.” 

The exhibit will be in town through April 13th. Cobden is the first of six Illinois locations to host the display. 

The exhibit is free and open to all. The museum will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. On Saturday, March 1. 

 

Special extended hours for the exhibit are as follows: Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m.
