OTTAWA — “Civil War Letters and Stories” will be the event presented 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25, inside the Ottawa Historical and Scouting HeritageMuseum, 1100 Canal St.

Local historians Dave Mumper, Chuck Sanders and Mollie Perrot will read letters from the battlefields and from those left at home that were written during the period of the Civil War. Stories will be shared as well.

Among the letters offered will be: Price family letters, some regarding the death ofHenry; a letter to T. Lyle Dickey from Matthew R. Tunno regarding the death ofWilliam Hervy Lamme Wallace, son-in-law of T. Lyle Dickey; a letter from JulietWallace regarding details of the death of W.H.L. Wallace’s widow, M. Anne Wallace; letters from Anne to W. H. L. written during the war; and a letter from a comrade in arms written to the parents of a young Ottawan, Robert Duffield, who “went to war” and never came home.

Visitors are encouraged to view the museum’s exhibit on the Civil War, including memorabilia on loan from a variety of local residents, and are reminded this exhibit will be removed from display after close of business Monday, April 9.

The exhibit will be closed in order to make room for the new local exhibit “The Way We Worked — Locally,” which will compliment the museum’s Smithsonianexhibit of the same name, presented through the efforts of the Smithsonian, the Illinois Humanities Council, the Canal Corridor Assn., and the Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum.
