Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution play an increasingly critical role in the lives of young people. Whether it involves censorship of a school newspaper, laws restricting teens’ rights to assemble, or youth-targeted advertising, young people’s rights are very often on the cutting edge of First Amendment issues.
