Women of Coal

This 45-minute slide presentation began as an eight panel photo exhibit with 54 pictures "of strong women with strong stories" from the central Appalachian coalfields. Although five of the women are coal miners, the other 49 are doctors, lawyers, environmental activists and disabled or displaced workers. Join Dr. Norris as he introduces these women and their stories, revealing that the history of women’s roles is rich and has too often been ignored or relegated to the sidelines of the history of coal cultures. In this program, photographs and words of self-expression combine to challenge the stereotypes of mountain and coalfield women. For more information contact Jill Pearce, 217.287.7397.
