What’s in a “mosque”?

From “A loyal Muslim American laments the mosque mess”, by Osman Adnan at Salon.com.

“In Middletown, I belong. But beyond Middletown, it seems as though some people can’t even conceive of my existence: a Muslim American who is a patriot, who served his country, who cherishes its ideals….I see the impulse that drove me to work as an American in Kashmir in the desire to build the Park51 Community Center.”

Questions for Consideration: What do you make of the rhetoric, “Mosques are monuments to terrorism”? Can a mosque at the World Trade Center site foster interfaith understanding and encourage peace? In what ways has the reaction to the Muslim community center created divisions amongst those interested? How can those reactions be used as an opportunity to stimulate productive dialogue?
