Voices: Will Benedict, Tom Humphreys, and Lucie Stahl

In a joint talk, artists Will Benedict, Tom Humphreys, and Lucie Stahl discuss their collaborative work on view in the third installment of the exhibition, The Program. They also address their experiences as classmates in art school at Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and their ongoing, collaborative artistic projects.

About the Artists
American-born, Vienna-based artist and curator Will Benedict (b. 1978) creates richly layered paintings composed of embedded picture planes that open onto one another within the space of the frame, falling somewhere between collage, assemblage, and miniature painting. The artist’s manipulated, multi-layered works speak to modern modes of seeing, remembering, and picturing the world in the Internet Age. Benedict’s solo exhibitions have been presented at Galleria Gió Marconi, Milan; Neue Alte Brücke, Frankfurt; and Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna. His work has been featured in group shows at Hotel, London; Vilma Gold, London; and Overduin and Kite, Los Angeles, among other venues.
Benedict ran the Vienna-based space Pro Choice/L’Ocean Licker with artist Lucie Stahl from 2008 to 2012 and curated several group exhibitions, which have been presented at Andrew Kreps Gallery and Bortolami Gallery in New York.

London-born and based artist and curator Tom Humphreys (b. 1972) creates objects, prints, and paintings that operate in a realm of visual flux. Humphreys’ collaged and glazed ceramic plates and sculptures made from everyday items and sometimes appearing unfinished reflect the artist’s refusal to assume any preset artistic mode of production or point-of-view. Humphreys‘ work explores problems of taste and truth, as well as the politics of art production, presentation, and consumption. Humphreys’ work was recently exhibited at Portikus, Frankfurt; Christian Andersen, Copenhagen; Bortolami Gallery, New York; Tomorrow, Toronto; Pro Choice, Vienna; and What Pipeline, Detroit. Humphreys founded and operated Flaca, a London project space dedicated to facilitating collaborative, group, and solo exhibitions by young international artists that ran from 2003 to 2007.

German artist and curator Lucie Stahl (b. 1977) creates large-scale, inkjet-printed posters and sculptural photomontages from a diverse array of found objects, texts, and art materials. She appropriates both cultural and personal representations of the roles of women. Her use of a flatbed scanner creates a tension between surface and depth, item and image. Stahl‘s work has been exhibited in exhibitions at Galleria Gió Marconi, Milan; dépendance, Brussels; What Pipeline, Detroit (with Tom Humphreys); Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna; Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne, Germany; and Kunstverein Nürnberg, Nuremberg, Germany. Along with Will Benedict, Stahl ran the Vienna artists’ space Pro Choice/L’Ocean Licker from 2008 to 2012.
