The UN Response to Asian Tsunami

The UN has been in the forefront of the world-wide response to the Asian tsunami. While its prompt humanitarian response has been widely admired (as well as the work of numerous non-governmental organizations), there is growing unease about the time it is taking to rebuild lives and livelihoods, to reconstruct the damaged infrastructure and homes, especially when the resources are apparently available. Masood Hyder spent three months in Aceh, leading the UN response there, and will attempt to respond to this question, and to deal with related issues of the UN’s humanitarian and developmental interventions.

Mr. Masood Hyder , United Nations Representative on World Food Programs/ WFP Representative to Bretton Wood Institutions, Washington D.C
