The Social Construction of Sexual Violence

Perceptions of sexual violence – and notions about the victims – are often shaped by ideology and recurring media messages that are inextricably intertwined with race, gender, sexuality, poverty, immigration and community. Join us for a conversation with activists, advocates, scholars and survivors to explore the construction of sexual violence in its real world context. This panel will feature Aishah Shahidah Simmons, producer/writer/director of “NO! The Rape Documentary”;Sharmili Majmudar, Executive Director, Rape Victim Advocates; representatives from Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation and the Illinois States Attorney’s Office; and Rachel Caidor, Founder, INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence. Sponsored by The Goodman Theatre. Co-sponsored by The Public Square.
