Taught by Kay Yang, formerly of the University of Chicago Center for the Study of Languages and now a PhD student at McGill University in Montreal, this short course introduces students to all aspects of documentary video production.

Using equipment loaned by the U of C Center for the Study of Languages, students work in groups of two or three to create short documentaries on a subject of their choosing.

This will be the second year that Ms. Yang has offered the course. Last year’s students produced videos dealing with a subjects including the impact of studying the humanities, a grass-roots effort to save a local community center, and the artistic process.

This year CAN-TV will air these films, and the Illinois Humanities Council welcomes them as entries in this year’s "Looking for Democracy" film contest.

This course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays through August 27, 2009. It will end with a screening party with date and location to be determined.

Students will need to purchase digital tapes ($3) and provide their own transportation.

This course is open to Odyssey Project graduates only. Admission is by application only.

To apply, interested graduates must send a proposal for a video documentary project by Friday, July 17, 2009. Applicants will be notified by Monday, July 20, 2009.
