African art is an integral part of Chicago culture. In recent years the city’s interest in Africa culture his has been illustrated by the success of the Chapungu – the exhibit of Shona sculptors from Zimbabwe, the popularity of the annual African Festival of the Arts, as well as return performances by such African artists as Habib Koite. The wearing of African traditional dress and hair-styles, the emergence of traditional drumming groups, the sustained presence of African shops on both the north and South sides of the city, all point to a growing African presence on an institutional level. But what impact has African culture had on creativity among artists African American artists? What are the indicators of influences after decades of interaction between African and African American cultureIs there conflict between traditional and new art forms?
