In partnership with the American Film Company, the Illinois Humanities Council presents a pre-screening of the movie The Conspirator.

The film will be followed by a special discussion and Q&A with Eileen Mackevich, Director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, and Brian Falk, producer of The Conspirator.

Directed by Robert Redford and starring Robin Wright and James McAvoy, The Conspirator is the story of the events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In the wake of the assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, the Vice-President, and the Secretary of State. The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt, 42, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks.

Against the ominous back-drop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, Frederick Aiken, a 28-year-old Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. As the trial unfolds, Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son.

A suspenseful thriller with action throughout, The Conspirator (2 hrs, 2 mins) tells the story of a woman who would do anything to protect her family and the man who risked everything to save her.

There will be a reception before the screening at 11:15 AM. The screening will start at 11:45 AM.
