A Road Scholar Program by Jeffrey F. Mishur

In this one hour program, images of various types of monsters will be discussed including: demons, devils, gargoyles, vampires, griffins, and more. A primary goal of the program is to examine the intended use of these subjects based upon the historical context in which they were created. Various artists from different cultures and time periods will be included to provide a relatively comprehensive look at such an important, albeit “creepy” tradition in Art History. Some artists whose work will be discussed include Hieronymous Bosch, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Francisco Goya, Gustave Klimt, Gustave Moreau, Paul Gauguin, and more.

Jeff Mishur earned his BA and MA in Art History from Northern Illinois University and has worked as an art historian and professor for over ten years. He was nominated as Facilitator of the Year by adult learners in the continuing education program at Lewis University and conducts numerous speaking engagements on a variety of art-related topics.
