The Armory Show of 1913 & The Legacy of Modernism

The International Exhibition of Modern Art that premiered one hundred years ago at the New York Armory was a major introduction of Eurpoean avant-guarde artists to the United States and a showcase of important works by American artists of the time. It remains an iconic symbol of the modernist movement, which began in the 1880s and continued through the mid-20th century.

The Armory Show of 1913 & The Legacy of Modernism” is a 5 day lecture and film series examining of turning points in 20th century creative and intellectual thought. The series probes some manifestations and impacts of modernism in the arts and humanities and in educational philosophy.

Today’s film and discussion, “Modernism and Cinema: A Contemporary Encounter” will be moderated by Walter Metz, Chair, SIU Dept. of Cinema & Photography. A closing reception will follow this program.
