Surabhi – A Melting Pot of Music will be an exciting lunchtime program introducing audiences to classical Indian, Spanish Flamenco, and traditional Turkish music.

The program will feature original acoustic instruments – Indian Veena, Arabic Oud, and Spanish Flamenco guitar, and a special performance by the Ensemble of Ragas.

Register for this free event and learn about the instruments through interactive demonstrations where you’ll be able to pick up an instrument or sing along. Learn about the Indian “Swara” musical style, the Spanish Flamenco beat style, and Turkish folk melodies.

Presenters

• Sara Ranganathan – A virtuoso of the traditional Indian Veena instrument, Sara has been featured in numerous world music festivals and was the first Veena artist to be featured in the musical “The Jungle Book,” adapted by Mary Zimmerman.
• Carlo Basile – Spanish Flamenco Guitarist who leads the Las Guitarras de Espana group, known for their melody, rhythm and foot-tapping dance presentations.
• Ronnie Malley – Turkish Oud artist and faculty member at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Featured in several plays of Mary Zimmerman, including The Jungle Book and White Snake.

This event is free and open to the public. However, registration is required and can be made online.

This event is presented as part of The Collaborative City, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, in partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and co-sponsored by Ensemble of Ragas School of Performing Arts.
