As part of its radio program series, Southern Illinois Wonders, produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting, the IHC presents “My Catholic Community” featuring Father Joseph Brown.

Father Joseph Brown’s parents chose to join the Roman Catholic Church. They contributed to the development of an African American Catholic community in southern Illinois in the mid-twentieth century, when segregation still affected many facets of life.

On this week’s Southern Illinois Wonders, Father Brown recalls his family’s early encounters with the Church in two different locations within the region, East St. Louis and Mound City. He reflects on the ways in which race relations, faith, fellowship, and participation in the Church influenced both his family’s experiences and his own personal and professional development.

This conversation will air at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on Wednesday, April 2nd on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.

Joseph A. Brown, S.J., Ph.D. is a Catholic priest, educator, scholar, and artist. A professor of Africana Studies at SIU Carbondale, he has also taught at Creighton University (Omaha), the University of Virginia, Xavier University (New Orleans), and St. Joseph’s University (Philadelphia). His publications include To Stand on the Rock: Mediations on Black Catholic Identity (Orbis Press, 1998), Sweet, Sweet Spirit: Prayer Services from the Black Catholic Church (St. Anthony Messenger Press, 2006), and collections of poetry. He studied philosophy, writing, and Afro-American and American studies at St. Louis, Johns Hopkins, and Yale universities. He participates in various community service endeavors and frequently speaks and writes about African American literature, culture, and religious life.

This event is part of Southern Illinois Wonders, a series of five-minute radio programs produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting in which authors, scholars, and artists explore humanities topics and themes relating to southern Illinois on Wednesdays at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.

Southern Illinois Wonders will return this fall as a monthly series. Stay tuned for more information.
