As part of its radio program series, Southern Illinois Wonders, produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting, the IHC presents “Metropolis – Steamboat Central?” featuring Bob Swenson.

Bob Swenson will speak on Metropolis, Illinois, as a center of steamboat building on the Ohio River in the post-Civil War era at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on Wednesday, April 2nd on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.

Bob Swenson is an architect, a historic preservationist, an associate professor of architecture emeritus at SIU Carbondale, and a consultant to SIUC’s Center for Archaeological Investigations. The Illinois State Historic Society presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 for his many contributions to the documentation and preservation of historic sites and structures throughout southern Illinois, including his leadership of SIUC’s widely praised Preservation Summer program. He is writing a book about the construction of Ohio River steamboats. Originally from Metropolis, he studied at SIUC and Yale University.

This event is part of Southern Illinois Wonders, a series of five-minute radio programs produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting in which authors, scholars, and artists explore humanities topics and themes relating to southern Illinois on Wednesdays at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.
