SIU Carbondale’s Morris Library recently hosted a traveling exhibit entitled Civil War 150. As a companion to that exhibit, the library displayed artifacts from the Civil War in southern Illinois, including letters contained in the library’s Special Collections.

On this installment of Southern Illinois Wonders, Judy Simpson and Aaron Lisec of Morris Library’s Special Collections Research Center present excerpts from letters written by Nancy Clendenin Mann of Liberty, Illinois, to her husband John, a Union soldier in the 5th Illinois Cavalry. Liberty, now called Rockwood, is a small community located on the Mississippi River in southern Randolph County. The letters vividly depict one southern Illinois family’s experience of life during the Civil War.

This conversation will air at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on Wednesday, May 21st on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.

Judy Simpson is a senior library specialist with the Special Collections Research Center at SIU Carbondale’s Morris Library.

Aaron Lisec is a research specialist with the Special Collections Research Center at SIU Carbondale’s Morris Library.

This event is part of Southern Illinois Wonders, a series of five-minute radio programs produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting in which authors, scholars, and artists explore humanities topics and themes relating to southern Illinois on Wednesdays at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.
