Southern Illinois Wonders presents "A Team Apart" featuring Judy Travelstead

As part of its radio program series, Southern Illinois Wonders, produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting, the IHC presents “A Team Apart” featuring Judy Travelstead.

Judy Travelstead will speak on early African American basketball teams in southernmost Illinois at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on Wednesday, March 12th on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.

This topic is being presented in conjunction with the Hometown Teams exhibit in Cobden, Illinois. Catch the exhibit, which is on display through April 13th, and the local event: “A Team Apart: Segregation in Sports, 1924-1954“.

Judy Travelstead is a longtime member of the board of directors of the Union County Historical and Genealogy Society, which is hosting the Museum on Main Street Hometown Teams exhibit in partnership with the IHC through April 13. A graduate of SIU Carbondale, she is retired from the Southern Illinoisan (newspaper), where she was a librarian for thirty years. She resides in Cobden with her husband, Will, a former SIUC administrator, and maintains a lifelong interest in the history of southern Illinois.

 

This event is part of Southern Illinois Wonders, a series of five-minute radio programs produced by WSIU Public Broadcasting in which authors, scholars, and artists explore humanities topics and themes relating to southern Illinois on Wednesdays at 6:30a, 8:30a, and 5:29p on WSIU 91.9FM / WUSI 90.3FM / WVSI 88.9FM.
