Songs from the Steel Rails, 1850-1925

A Road Scholar program by Rick Pickren

This musical presentation focuses on the central position that Chicago holds in the evolution of the Railroad system from east to west and from steam to diesel locomotion. From the Rock Island Line to the “City of New Orleans,” from Jesse James to the Wreck of the Old ’97, and through a collection of original songs written by Rick Pickren, this program examines the social impact that early railroads had on all aspects of American life.
