This presentation will explore the ways in which the prairie landscape of central Illinois and the Amish and Mennonite traditions shaped Jeff’s early years and, in many ways, my whole life. The lecture will include selections from essays and poems about the place and its people–especially Jeff’s relatives–from his books A Community of Memory, Scattering Point: The World in a Mennonite Eye , Flatlands and Walker in the Fog: On Mennonite Writing .
