In the first neighborhood dialogue for the IHC’s Reporting Back series, meet journalist Bill Healy and south side Chicago resident Chiquita Toby and help inform their forthcoming radio story on the everyday, often untold experiences of people living in neighborhoods affected by gun violence.
Reporting Back is a three-month, multimedia reporting project pairing journalists with community residents to investigate critical issues in their communities. As they work to produce text, video, radio and comics journalism content, neighborhood dialogues will serve as ways to engage with the community at all stages of the storytelling process and ensure they fuel and inform already ongoing conversations.
Join us to learn more about their project, share your perspectives with Chiquita and Bill, and take part in a crucial conversation about how media can tell the stories of neighborhoods affected by gun violence more deeply and effectively.

The Reporting Back Radio Team:
Bill Healy is a freelance journalist based on Chicago’s Southwest Side. He has worked on several months-long series for WBEZ/Chicago Public Radio on topics ranging from juvenile prisons to the heroin pipeline in and out of Chicago. Bill’s work has appeared on NPR and the BBC, as well as on public radio’s Marketplace program. In 2012, he photographed This American Life’s award-winning series at Harper High School in Englewood. Bill currently produces StoryCorps for WBEZ and teaches audio production at Northwestern University.
Chiquita “Kita” Toby is a 26-year-old graduate of The Odyssey Project (2012) where she studied philosophy, literature, history and art history. In her spare time she writes poetry and attends spoken word sessions in the Chicago area.
