Winifred Haun & Dancers will premiere its first full length ballet, “Promise,” on October 9 and 10 at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts.

“Promise” is choreographed by Winifred Haun and, for this premiere, Ms. Haun incorporates the use of aerial straps with modern dance to create a powerful and dramatic work.

“Promise” is inspired by the women, images and psychological themes found in John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, “East of Eden.” Rather than re-telling the story of East of Eden, “Promise” explores issues of community vs individual need, rebellion and conformity, and violence and redemption. Through two female central characters, the ballet also describes how women and communities respond to conflicts.

The cast of “Promise” features 14 dancers, including prominent Chicago ballet teacher and performer, Natalie Rast. The full work is 45 minutes, and includes music by folk singer/songwriter Jolie Holland, hip-hop artist Kanye West, and 20th century classical music composers, George Crumb and Maki Ishii.
