Piatt County Barn Tour

12th Annual Barn Tour, a celebration of Piatt County’s rich agricultural history. Visitors will meander along a 35-mile historic and scenic route through Goose Creek Township northwest of Monticello and learn about the agricultural heritage that played an important role in the founding of the township and Piatt County. Guests can visit 20 barns, explore Centennial farms, discover restored pioneer cemeteries and other historic sites including part of a trail traveled by Abraham Lincoln while he practiced law as a circuit-rider throughout Central Illinois. Historical displays of DeLand area photographs and memorabilia, farm animals, antique tractors, country gardens, fall produce, home-baked goods and other festive agricultural activities will be featured along the route.

Special guest to the festival on Sunday, October 11 from noon – 3:00 PM will be award-winning photographic artist, Larry Kanfer who will offer a signing of his newest book, Barns of Illinois. In his new collection, Kanfer documents the diversity of barns throughout the Prairie State, from weathered, abandoned shelters in the countryside to proudly well-preserved landmarks featured in barn tours around the state. Barns of Illinois will be available for purchase throughout the weekend. The 2009 Piatt County Barn Tour is presented by the Piatt County Museum with support from the Monticello FFA Chapter.

The tour will start at the Museuem building site adjacent to Monticello Railway Museum at Exit 166. The Barn Tour will run from October 9, 2009 through October 11, 2009.

This self-guided tour is $15 per person, which includes maps and accompanying historical information. Maps and accompanying historical information will be available ONLY on days of the tour.
