Permaculture: An Introduction to Sustainable Design

The Windy City is not typically the first place one would think of with regard to organic farming – up until now, anyway.

Register and take part in this free presentation and discussion that will provide an introduction for people who are curious to learn about permaculture, sustainable design, and organic gardening.

Permaculture emphasizes the importance of gardening and growing food organically. It is practiced and taught in many countries, and draws from many different approaches to provide people with the energy, food, and resources needed for a thriving community.

The session will cover the many facets of permaculture as a potential way of making healthy food available for more residents in the Chicago area.

This event is free and open to the public.
However, registration is required and can be made online.

About the Presenter
Matthew Stephens is the founder of the Earth Reforestation Project, Permaculture America, and Permaculture Chicago. Under the tutelage of Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton, the former credited with first coining the term Permaculture, he received his Permaculture Design Certification in Melbourne, Australia. Internationally, he has participated in Permaculture projects in Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Tasmania. Since 2011, he has worked with Chicago’s oldest community garden, Xochiquetzal (1986), as both a mentor and permaculture design consultant and educator.

This event is presented as part of The Collaborative City, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, in partnership with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).
