People and the Environment

This program examines how people have historically shaped and influenced the environmental landscape in Illinois. It explores the history of the population explosion in Chicago and how it helped create early environmental and public health problems throughout the state that resulted in the creation of the I&M Canal, as well as the Sanitary Ship Canal. This population explosion, coupled with the rapid industrial expansion at the turn of the 20th Century, resulted in devastating typhoid fever and cholera outbreaks for residents throughout Illinois.
