Why do we have public schools?

It’s a direct enough question that’s rarely asked when conversations around education become heated.

In this program, the first in the yearlong, statewide series Continuing Ed.: Parents and the Future of Illinois Public Schools, Harvard professor Danielle Allen considers public education’s past to think through its purpose and possibilities in the present. Sharing additional perspectives are former Department of Education Assistant Secretary Peter Cunningham, UChicago Charter CEO Shayne Evans, Brighton Park Neighborhood Council Executive Director Patrick Brosnan, Kenwood Academy student Laurence Minter, and Senn High School principal Mary Beck.
