From bandits to lovers, from merely background figures to central protagonists, the depiction of Latinos by Hollywood has gone through a remarkable trajectory. Surprisingly, despite our 20th century political and social enlightenment, history shows us that there were more Latino characters on the screen during Hollywood’s Golden Age (1930 – 1950) than today. However, a renaissance of Latinos on television and in film is taking place, albeit slowly. Learn how new strides forward in Latino film have sought to expel the myths, types and stereotypes that have pervaded Hollywood for more than half a century.
