Moveable Feast: A Playshop about Food and Home

Leaving home is hard to do. When we do so, we leave a lot of things behind—important things; things that make a house a home. The difficult transition is often helped by what we CAN bring along—memories, a few trinkets… and our recipes.

Adobo - Traditional Filipino DishRSVP and join this free community conversation about the food that reminds us of home and stays with us when we build a new one. Together with Donna Pierce, former Chicago Tribune Assistant Food Editor and historian of Great Migration recipes, we’ll share our varied food backgrounds and discuss how food travels with us wherever we go, keeping us close to our roots, and helping shape our identities when we’re far from home. Then, our conversation will lead us into a community cookbook-making “playshop” led by artists from Columbia College Chicago’s Center for Book and Paper Arts, inspired by the personal experiences (and recipes!) that we’ve shared.

Inspired by two recent IHC events — Home Again: Stories of Migration and The Frying Pan Stories: Pages Ripped From Our Cookbooks — this event will marry the two topics and make space for a conversation and community art project about the intersection of our homes, our identity and our food.

Bring your neighbors, friends and family and together we’ll make a community cookbook!

Refreshments from local Albany Park establishment will be served.
