This two-day interdisciplinary conference will explore the art, experiences and legacies of women artists working in the Midwest between 1840 and 1940.

The Midwestern United States consists of the following states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Symposium events scheduled for Thursday, November 7, include:

• an opportunity to tour the Citywide Celebration of Women Artists exhibitions located throughout Peoria (1:00-4:30 PM);
• a keynote address by Wanda Corn, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Stanford University, entitled “Women Building History: Mary Cassatt and Her Sister Artists at the 1893 Columbian Exposition” at the Caterpillar Global Communications Center on the Bradley University campus (5:00-6:00 PM);
• a reception and tour of an exhibition of paintings by Eleanor Coen in the University’s Heuser Arts Center Gallery, led by the artist’s daughter, Katie Kahn (6:00-7:30 PM);
• and opportunities to view an exhibition, Matters of Women, in the University’s Hartmann Center Gallery (throughout the day).

Registration is recommended. This sypomsium is free and open to the public.
However, lunch, travel and overnight expenses will be the responsibility of the symposium participant.

The symposium is organized by the Bradley University Art History Program and the Illinois Women Artists Project with support from the Inland Visual Studies Center and the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
