Halsted The UIC African American Cultural Center (AACC) and the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum present, "Ida: In Her Own Words," a book signing and discussion with author Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells-Barnett. This tribute to Ida B. Wells-Barnett is held in conjunction with the UIC African American Cultural Center’s latest exhibition, ‘The Reason Why’ commemorating the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. The free exhibit on display now at AACC recognizes the 120th anniversary of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 as an opportunity to relate historical accounts of African Americans’ experiences of the Fair to contemporary debates over large-scale public festivities in Chicago. Ida B. Wells, the noted African American activist and journalist, famously produced a pamphlet called "The Reason Why the Colored American is Not in the World’s Columbian Exposition," expressing how African Americans in Chicago felt about their exclusion from significant international forum and stereotypical portrayals of African Americans in the Fair itself. "Ida: In Her Own Words" will commence with a reception. Students from the UIC Trio and Upward Bound programs will read tributes. The evening will conclude with Wells-Barnett’s great granddaughter, Michelle Duster, who will share works from Ida In Her Own Words: The Timeless Writings of Ida B. Wells From 1893.
