Jazz & Blues in Chicago: A Cultural Phenomenon

This first-person music and slide presentation examines Chicago’s early prominence as a performance mecca and incubator for jazz and blues. During the post-Civil War period of industrial expansion, African American migrants seeking a better life arrived in the city in great masses. Musicians, responding to the migrant’s desire for entertainment, also flocked to the city. Before long, Chicago became a melting pot of musical styles that would transform the American cultural landscape and eventually the world.
