Intersections is Columbia College Chicago’s lively series of lectures and discussions investigating contemporary culture and the arts.

This lecture, given by Dr. Robert Watkins of Columbia College Chicago, will explore how Kelly Reichardt’s film Wendy and Lucy offers a revealing portrait of economic insecurity in what President Obama critically calls today’s “on-your-own economy.”

Reichardt explains the idea behind her film this way: “There’s a certain kind of help that society will give and a certain help it won’t give. So we imagined Wendy as a renter; no insurance, just making ends meet.” Reichardt invites the audience to experience Wendy’s predicament along with her.

Robert Watkins will connect the film to today’s experience of economic insecurity. Short clips will be shown along with the lecture, followed by audience discussion.
