In Good Spirits: Chicago's Graceland Cemetery

A Road Scholar program by Barbara Geiger

Graceland Cemetery is such a significant Midwestern landscape that it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This slide presentation will offer a close look at THE cemetery for Gilded Age Chicago’s movers and shakers through historic and contemporary photos. Featuring a collection of architecturally important monuments and little-known stories of important Chicagoans, this virtual tour presents a thorough overview of nationally prominent landscape architect O.C. Simonds’s (1855-1931) beautifully designed and meticulously maintained pastoral setting at Graceland.

Barbara Geiger is currently on faculty at the College of Architecture of the Illinois Institute of Technology. She earned her MA in Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she won an award from the American Society of Landscape Architects for her thesis. Geiger has taught numerous courses at the Chicago Botanic Garden and at the Newberry Library.
