During the early 20th century, Chicago experienced a creative explosion. Artists and writers came from across the world at a time when the city was seen as new, vibrant, and daring. Writers met in clubs, established journals, gave readings, and worked together. They fought against the formal, rather British approach to poetry in an effort to find a truly American voice. In this slide-lecture presentation, Becky Bradway will explore the lives and works of writers who spent time in the city including Sherwood Anderson, Ben Hecht, Carl Sandburg, Harriet Monroe, Alice Corbin Henderson, Langston Hughes, Vachel Lindsay, Edna Ferber, and many others – a high-spirited, politically-minded group of intriguing personalities.
