From ‘Stunned’ Blagojevich Guilty of Corruption by Kari Lydersen and Idalmy Carrera

“Former Gov. Rod Blagojevich was found guilty on all but three counts in his federal corruption retrial Monday, including guilty verdicts on charges related to his effort to sell the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by President Barack Obama. The conviction on 17 of 20 counts against him Monday capped a weeks-long courtroom drama and concludes one of the most dramatic political-corruption sagas in Illinois history. It also emphatically marks the climax of a political, legal and celebrity odyssey that began in December of 2008 when law officers roused Blagojevich from his bed and arrested him based on wiretapped evidence of wide-ranging conversations with his aides.”

Questions for Consideration

What kind of legacy does Former Governor Blagojevich leave behind? Why do you think there has been such a long history of political corruption among Illinois governors? How can citizens of Illinois take more control and responsibility in electing honest politicians who care about them?
