Illinois and the Underground Railroad

A Road Scholar program by Glennette Tilley Turner

Although many people don’t know it, slaves who sought to escape the brutal Southern plantation regime often took refuge on the Underground Railroad in Illinois. In fact, Illinois played a significant role in the elaborate networks that made up the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. In this multimedia presentation, historian Glennette Tilley Turner acquaints audiences with this little known chapter of the state’s history as she chronicles the story of the railroad in Illinois.
