Comics have always been a home for people who identify outside of mainstream culture. But how are those outside the mainstream represented in comic books? Join this interactive discussion about how race, ethnicity, religious identity and sexual orientation are represented in comic books.

Using Ms. Marvel, Batwing, and The Green Lantern as example texts, and with Dav Yendler on hand illustrating the group’s ideas and proposals, “Heroes Like Us” will investigate the advantages and pitfalls of diversity and cultural appropriation in the comic book form.

Where is the comic book world succeeding and where could they improve?

What’s interesting and what’s uncomfortable about the shifting use of symbols and identities in the modern world?

This event is presented in partnership with The Dilettantes and sponsored by Dimo’s Pizza.
