Harriet Monroe was the founding editor of Poetry, one of the earliest and most enduring literary journals. She devoted her life to the venture and the idea behind it: that poetry and poets deserve public and private support. Poetry published some of the best work by writers who were then relatively unknown: Ezra Pound, Vachel Lindsay, Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, and many others. How Monroe was able to do this in the early 20th century, when women rarely lived and worked independently, is an important part of this presentation.
