Fundamentalism first appeared in early 20th century America as an offshoot of conservative Protestantism but has become a mainstay of international politics as the century progressed. This presentation will begin with the platform of early Christian fundamentalism and offer an assessment of how it fared over the past 100 years. The program will continue with an examination of other religious expressions of fundamentalism, particularly Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam. The program will end with an open, but guided, discussion of fundamentalism as a rejection of modernity and how that can lead to radicalism and violence.
