Conversations on Curating: Proposals, Pedagogy, and Practice

What goes on behind the scenes in the process of creating museum exhibits and art exhibitions? How can students, professionals, and the public learn about the process of curating successful exhibits that engage the public at large?

This public event, “Conversations on Curating,” brings together students, professors, and the public to discuss student-generated art exhibits that are recently completed or currently in progress.

This unique public event is a collaboration between the Grand Valley State University Department of Art and Design, the Department of Exhibition and Performance Spaces at Columbia College Chicago, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Art Department.

Groups from each institution will present their exhibits and discuss the curatorial process that goes into exhibit-making. The discussion will engage the audience to learn about the process of curating exhibits, the logistics of curating as a group, and the important role of curators in the contemporary cultural landscape.

“Conversations on Curating” will provide a rare opportunity for students and professors to connect with each other across educational institutions and with the general public.

Participants include:

  • Anna Campbell, Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Design at Grand Valley State University, teaches the class “Curatorial Studio”
  • Neysa Page-Lieberman, Director and Curator in the Department of Exhibition and Performance Spaces at Columbia College
  • Robert Blandford, Associate Professor and Supervisor of Visual Arts Management at Columbia College
  • Laurie Beth Clark, Professor of Art in the Department of Art at UW-Madison, teaches the class “Artist as Curator”
