A Road Scholar Program by Beth Johnson
This PowerPoint presentation examines the evolution of Chicago’s Black Metropolis – Bronzeville – and explores its growth and economic development as a result of the establishment of the Binga State Bank. Established by entrepreneur Jesse Binga, the Binga State Bank was the first State chartered, African American-owned bank in Chicago. A native of Chicago, Beth Johnson holds an advanced degree in Historic Preservation from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition to lecturing, she works as an architectural consultant on preservation projects throughout the Chicagoland area. She is currently in the process of establishing a nonprofit organization dedicated to the identification, documentation, and preservation of minority cultural sites.
