Recent spikes in gun violence in Chicago have attracted extensive media coverage in the area and nationwide. With much of the reporting focused heavily on the numbers, how has media coverage of Chicago’s violence epidemic influenced public perceptions? We will discuss this question and more at Tuesday’s Cafe Society.
Questions For Consideration:
Does thinking about gun violence as a public health issue or an economic issue help us envision solutions in a way that standard arguments about gun control don’t? In a recent meeting with community leaders, Mayor Rahm Emanuel emphasized that “it’s the job of all of us” to help reduce gun violence. What are our responsibilities as media consumers and citizens? How can we use media to enhance our understanding of this issue and work towards violence reduction? How would you assess the media’s coverage of gun violence?
