Before Title IX: Women Athletes in Ancient Greece and Rome

A Road Scholar Program by Georgia Tsouvala

This illustrated presentation provides background on ancient athletics and a corrective on women’s athletics, in particular. Recent scholarship shows that women of the Hellenistic and Roman periods were members of gymnasia and wrestling grounds, and actively participated in athletics like their male counterparts.
